The Quagan Qulu ophiolite is exposed in the Badain Jaran fault belt, consisting of tectonic blocks and matrix rocks. The matrixes of the mélange consist mainly of microclastic rocks, including tuffs, siltstones, silty mudstones, and mudstones. Tectonic blocks in the mélange belt consist of lenticular and striped ultramafic rocks, gabbros, cherts, and rare basalts. Gabbros in the Quagan Qulu ophiolite exhibit boninite-like geochemical characteristics, and have zircon SHRIMP U–Pb age of 275 ± 3 Ma.
