Date: April 29, 2025

Location: This roadcut extends for about fifty metres along the eastern shoulder of Owyhee Lake Road about 0.40km north of the eastern terminus of Owyhee Dam.

Coordinates: The center of the collecting area is at 43.646067. -117.242822 and extends for about twenty-five metres both uphill and downhill from there.

Host Rock: The deposit is sheet basalt interbedded with welded tuff. There is meagre evidence of sedimentary deposits. Most of the basalt shows considerable surface weathering and oxidation. The tuff is extensively altered by both heat and water.

Mineral Species: No specific, well-characterised mineral species were observed in hand samples, although opal appears likely. Chalcedony is locally present. Volcanic glass occurs, ranging from initial chalcedony to very poor-quality "obsidian" (proto-obsidian). A wide range of clay and other amorphous materials are present. Although this site does not present "collectible" mineral species (so far, anyway), it does illustrate the wide range of rock changes during the formation of obsidian.
