The mines Kongens, Arvedals and Rødalen gruver are all parts of one, more than 2.5 km long, ruler-shaped, flat-lying ore deposit.
The eastern part of the deposit was found in 1657 and became the Arvedal mine. This mine was worked until it was closed down in 1714. The continuation westwards was found in 1735 and was called the Kongens mine. This mine was in the first period worked until 1819. The mining company, Røros Kobberverk, also exploited the waste dumps after the mining at the Arvedal part of the deposit in this period. The Arvedal mine was emptied for water in 1839 and a new adit was finished into the mine in 1849.
