Wando is located on the shore of the Wando River, a tidal tributary of Charleston Harbor in South Carolina. The locality primarily sits atop the Pleistocene Wando Formation (approximately 70,000–130,000 years old), near the boundary with the older Ten Mile Hill beds (approximately 200,000–240,000 years old). This boundary roughly corresponds to the ancient Pamlico shoreline.

During the Pamlico interglacial highstand, the area now known as Wando lay just below the mainland shoreline. At slightly higher sea levels, uplifted portions of the Ten Mile Hill beds likely formed a barrier island, with the Wando area situated beneath or adjacent to this shoreline environment.

The basal layers of the Wando Formation in this area are known for containing reworked marine fossils (primarily of Miocene age) as well as phosphorite "pebbles" and associated deposits. In certain parts of Wando, tidal creeks branching from the Wando River actively cut through the sediments and locally expose small outcroppings of these basal layers, providing access to fossiliferous material and sedimentological features.

Certain fossiliferous exposures within this locality are being privately documented for scientific and conservation purposes. The precise locations of these sites are not publicly disclosed to help preserve their integrity.
