The Monte Galero breccias are mainly carbonate breccias, formed as a consequence of the deepening of the Ligurian-Piedmontese oceanic basin during the Late Jurassic. These sedimentary bodies were deposited in slope to slope-to-basin environment. Calcite occurs within small cavities of the breccias.
Among the clastic components of the Monte Galero breccias, rare clasts predominantly composed of schorl tourmaline (first identified by Matteo Azili in 2025 and subsequently confirmed by Dr. P. Vignola, CNR) can occasionally be observed; subordinate phases include quartz and reworked feldspars. The provenance of these clasts is not entirely clear, but they most likely represent fragments derived from the Briançonnais domain, later redeposited within the sedimentary basin of the Arnasco-Castelbianco tectonic unit through submarine turbidites processes.
