Scinde Island
Napier Hill is an outcrop of limestone in the city of Napier.
Before the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, the area, known as Scinde Island, was nearly encircled by water, connected only by two shingle spits extending north and south. The earthquake uplifted the Napier area, causing the sea to retreat and exposing the land around the island and spits.
