According to a Victorian Department of Mines Report in 1941,"Lease No. 11031 is situated south and west from the Golden Square Railway Station, the north east corner "being a few chains distant from the station. Its area is 48 acres and it contains a length of about 24 chains of the Carshalton Anticline, the outcrop of which is close to the west boundary of the lease. The Lancashire fold, the approximate length of which, within the Central part of the area, is 12 chains from the north boundary. This anticline southward rolls out and becomes part of the gold bearing section of the east limb of the Carshalton anticline.
The Whip and Jersey surface workings/which are distinct and further east from these anticlines, are about 200 feet west from the main shaft. Records suggest that this formation consisted of an irregular spurry quartz system set between two strong east dipping backs which are 60 feet apart. This section of auriferous beds was intersected by the main shaft, the depth of which is 1321 feet, between the depths of 530 feet and 800 feet. Available information indicates that these beds disclosed five horizons in which gold had been obtained. These vertical locations are surface to 200 feet; 200 feet to 390 feet; 480 feet to 580 feet; 660 feet to 700 feet; and 900 feet to 960 feet.
A limited recorded tonnage shows the average yield - which is probably much higher - to the depth of 200 feet as 10.7 dwts per ton. From 200 feet to 900 feet the averaged limited recorded yield is 6 dwts."
