Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Hazel Atlas Mine
A former silica sand mine that is located within the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. Part of the mine can be toured (as of 2024).
In the 1922, a mine producing high-quality silica sandstone was started by owner R. Marvin Greathouse on a hillside above the Somersville townsite. He sold the product to the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company. The sand was transported to the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company's factory in Oakland, California, where it was used to make glass products. Hazel-Atlas eventually purchased the mine and operated it until about 1945.
The mine consists of three areas: Greathouse Workings, Hazel-Atlas North Workings, and Hazel-Atlas South Workings. The Greathouse Portal was used to access the Greathouse Workings, while the Hazel-Atlas Portal was used to access the Hazel-Atlas North Workings. Both portals access the Hazel-Atlas South Workings.
