Independent Mine


A 710-foot sealed shaft, which was the most northerly mine entry in the Mt. Diablo Coal Field. The shaft was sunk in 1865. By 1867, the company operating at the time failed. The shaft became inactive with the exception of being used to pump water from the nearby Eureka Mine. In 1873, the boiler attached to the bolts exploded and killed two men. Eventually, the Pittsburg Mining Company purchased the property, and the shaft returned to service around 1900. Soon after, the shaft was abandoned due to high production costs, better coal up in Washington, and the usage of oil as an industrial power source.

Some stones, bolts, and a depression in the ground are all that remain (as of December 2023). The site is directly next to the Black Diamond Mines Upper Parking Lot. It is within the boundaries of the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve.
