The basin basement is composed of Proterozoic and Paleozoic metamorphic rocks including gneiss, amphibolite, sericite schist, and marble, which are exposed along the basin margins. The basin proper is filled predominantly with early–late Triassic marine clastic, carbonate, and sandy mudstone units, middle Jurassic marine to terrigenous red clastic and minor carbonate sedimentary units, Cretaceous shallow lacustrine-facies red clastic sedimentary units, and Cenozoic red clastic sedimentary units and evaporites. Early Triassic intrusions and Triassic mafic to felsic volcanic rocks, thought to be related to the subduction of the Paleo-Tethyan Ocean, crop out along the western and eastern margins of the basin, and 42–20 Ma alkaline intrusions, thought to be related to the lithospheric thinning caused by the India–Asia continental collision, are exposed in the eastern, western, and southern margins of the basin.
In the Lanping Basin, there are >100 sediment-hosted hydrothermal base metal deposits and prospects, which are located mainly in the northern part of the basin. The vein-type Cu deposits and prospects (e.g., the Jinman, Liancheng, and Maocaoping deposits) in the Lanping Basin are distributed mainly in and around the Biluoxueshan–Chongshan metamorphic zone on the western rim of the basin, whereas the stratiform Cu deposits and prospects (e.g., the Baiyangchang deposit) are located mainly in the central part of the basin. Due to the greater reserves and higher grades of the vein-type Cu deposits in the Lanping Basin, they are more economically significant than the stratiform Cu deposits. The vein-type Cu deposits and prospects occur in the root zone of the western thrust–nappe system of the basin and are distributed primarily along small scale approximately N–S striking faults that were triggered by regional E–W compression and associated thrusting during the Cenozoic.
