To keep costs low, the gold and silver ore from the mines in the Mogollon Mining District needed to be processed as close as possible. Many of the mines were located in Whitewater Canyon, which was too narrow for processing. Thus, the best location for the mill was at the mouth of the canyon. In 1893, John T. Graham arrived to build a mill. Both the mill (Graham Mill) and the mining town (Graham, New Mexico) would be named after him. However, a four-inch water pipe that ran about three miles from higher waters down to Graham would be necessary to run the steam generators and supply the town. The mining operations increased, so an 18-inch pipe was constructed next to the original four-inch pipe. The canyon walls had holes drilled into them to ensure adequate support for the pipes. The mill closed in 1913, and the town disappeared. Only some remains of the mill exist in the present day (as of 2023).
