Carrière Granite St-Gérard
Description: Medium-grained pale gray and fine-grained medium gray granite (rarer) from the Aylmer Pluton. Locally, the rock is slightly bluish.
The composition of the granite is as follows, according to MB 94-37:
Quarry A: 55% feldspar, 30% quartz, 15% mica (biotite + muscovite). The sheets are thin, varying from 30 cm to 2 m thick.
Quarry B: 55% feldspar, 30% quartz, 15% mica (biotite + muscovite). The sheets are thick, varying from 1 to 3 m thick.
Quarry A probably corresponds to Quarry 5 and Quarry B corresponds to Quarry 4 from Jacob, 1983.
Comment — harmful element: The undesirable elements are the presence of frequent quartz veins (1 to 8 cm wide), oriented east-west and a rare presence of pyrite. There is also a quartz porphyry dike and a rusty and fractured zone. The irregularity in the thickness of the layers and, mainly, the tight spacing of the joints probably contributed to the abandonment of several excavations.
