Lemmekeskoel quarry
The Groeve Lemmekenskoel or Groeve Lemmekeskoel is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The underground quarry is located south of Valkenburg in a slope forest on the Sibbergrubbe on the northeastern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
About 200, 350 and 370 meters to the north respectively are the Groeve behind Lemmekenskoel, the Beckersbergske and the Groeve next to Beckersbergske,
about 235 meters to the northeast is the Vallenberg quarry,
on the other side of the Sibbergrubbe are the Groeve het Kornelsbergske and Groeve het Paulusbergske,
about 150 meters to the southeast is the Groeve het Nullelokske and about 270 meters to the southwest is the Fleschenberg quarry.
From the late Middle Ages until the 19th century, the quarry was mined by block crushers for the extraction of limestone.
The quarry is known for its legend surrounding the sheep shepherd. If ever a shepherd goes to take shelter in the quarry, the quarry will collapse and the sheep outside will suddenly be without a shepherd. There are said to be several bones in the quarry.
The Lemmekenskoel quarry has a collapsed entrance section and is characterized by earth pipes. The quarry has a size of 90 by 90 meters. The total surface area of the quarry is 7,190 square meters, with a corridor length of approximately 878 meters.
