Groeve van de Hondenmummie
The Quarry Essenbosch IV or Groeve van de Hondenmummie ("Quarry of the Dog Mummy") is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The underground quarry is located southeast of Valkenburg and southwest of Oud-Valkenburg in the western part of the Sint-Jansbosch slope forest on the northeastern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal.
The Groeve Essenbosch III, Groeve Essenbosch II and Groeve Essenbosch I are located approximately 50, 100 and 155 meters to the south respectively,
the Groeve van de Scheve Spar II is located approximately 180 meters to the east,
the Groeve van de Scheve Spar I is located approximately 160 meters to the southeast,
and approximately 275-300 meters to the north are the Sint-Jansbosch Quarry I, II, III, IV and V.
From the 17th to the 19th century, the quarry was mined by block crushers for the extraction of limestone.
The quarry has an area of approximately 111 square meters and a corridor length of approximately 25.5 meters. The quarry has largely collapsed due to earth pipes.
The quarry is carved into the Limestone of Schiepersberg, just below and/or over the Horizont of Romontbos.
