Theunis quarry east


The Groeve Theunissen II or Theunis quarry east is a former marl quarry in Dutch South Limburg in the municipality of Maastricht. The quarry is located in the western valley wall of the Jekerdal, on the southeastern valley wall of the Dry Valley of the Kleine and Lange Zouw and on the northern slope of the Louwberg. To the northwest lies the Campagne district and to the northeast the Biesland district. The quarry is located on the Susserweg.

About 70 meters to the southwest is the Theunissen I quarry and about 650 meters to the south is the Apostel quarry.


In the 19th century, the quarry was constructed by contractor G. Theunissen for the extraction of limestone as a building material by block crushers.

Limestone blocks were also extracted from the quarry in 1914-1916.

During the Second World War, the quarry was used as an air raid shelter. After the war, the quarry fell into disuse and the entrance closed.

In 1977, a crawlway was made so that the quarry could be re-entered.

The quarry was reopened in September 1986 after digging away approximately five meters of garbage.

Quarry Theunissen II is a medium-sized quarry. The quarry consists of a long corridor with corridors that are four meters high. The total corridor length is 113 meters and the quarry has an area of ​​0.09 hectares. The quarry is characterized by 14 earth pipes.

The entrance to the quarry is closed, so that bats can use the quarry as a roost.

The manager of the quarry is the D.C. van Schaïk Foundation. In 2017, the quarry was examined for safety and was partially approved.

The quarry was carved into the Meerssen Limestone from the Maastricht Formation.
