Theunis quarry west
The Groeve Theunissen I or Theunis quarry west is a former marl quarry in Dutch South Limburg in the municipality of Maastricht. The quarry is located in the western valley wall of the Jekerdal, on the southeastern valley wall of the Dry Valley of the Kleine and Lange Zouw and on the northern slope of the Louwberg. To the northwest lies the Campagne district and to the northeast the Biesland district. The quarry is located on the Susserweg.
The Theunissen II Quarry is located approximately 70 meters to the northeast and the Apostel Quarry is located approximately 650 meters to the south.
The quarry was mined by block crushers for the extraction of limestone blocks.
The quarry entrance is covered by a thick layer of garbage and rubble with a thickness of eight to ten meters. On top of this there is a meadow, so nothing of the quarry can be seen any more.
The quarry is carved into the Meerssen Limestone from the Maastricht Formation.
