The Apostel quarry, Louberg quarry, Apostelhoeve quarry or Apostelhoeve cave is a former marl quarry in Dutch South Limburg in the municipality of Maastricht. The quarry is located in the western valley wall of the Jekerdal and on the northeastern slope of the Louwberg.
The quarry is partly located under the Apostelhoeve. The entrance is located halfway up the slope on the Dalingsweg, the connecting road between this farm and Hoeve Nekum.
About 650 meters to the north are the Groeve Theunissen I and Groeve Theunissen II, and about 500 meters to the south is the Fallenberg quarry.
In 1770, block breakers constructed a new quarry at the Apostelhoeve for the extraction of limestone blocks as building material.
In 1772, a new entrance was constructed because the old entrance was in danger of collapsing.
In 1777, the mining of the quarry was stopped.
After the Second World War until 1975, the quarry was used as a mushroom farm.
In 1981 the quarry was closed with a fence. The quarry became the first bat reserve of the Studiegroep Onderaardse Kalksteengroeven ("Subterranean Limestone Quarries Study Group"). In 1981, the Koelebos quarry and the Roother quarry were also managed as reserves by the study group.
The quarry is largely located beneath the Apostelhoeve and has two floors.
The entrance to the quarry is closed, so that bats can use the quarry as a roost.
The manager of the quarry is the D.C. van Schaïk Foundation. In 2017, the quarry was examined for safety and was partially approved.
The Apostel Quarry is carved into the Maastricht Formation. The upper floor is carved into the Meerssen Limestone and the lower floor into the Nekum Limestone. Between the two floors there is a hard layer 90 centimeters thick, this is the Horizont of Caster.
