Studentengroeve; La Caverne de Geulhem
The Studentengroeve ("Student Quarry"), also known as "La Caverne de Geulhem" ("The Geulhem Cavern"), is a marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The underground quarry is located in Geulhem in the Bergse Heide slope forest on the northern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
About 170 meters to the east is the Heide Quarry, about 250 meters to the southeast is the Barakken quarry, about 30 meters to the west is the entrance to the Koepel quarry ("Dome Quarry"), about 150 meters to the west is the entrance to the Amor quarry and about 400 meters to the west are the entrances to the Geulhemmer quarry and the Rock Houses of Geulhem.
The quarry was mined by block crushers for the extraction of limestone blocks.
The name of the quarry is said to refer to how students used to have parties in the quarry.
During the First World War, the Student quarry was used as a shelter for Belgian refugees.
Until 1984, the quarry was used as a mushroom farm.
In 1993, the quarry was converted into a restaurant and party space.
The Student quarry has been partly affected by open-pit mining.
The quarry is equipped as a restaurant with underfloor heating.
The adjacent Koepelgroeve ("Dome quarry") is used as a storage facility for the restaurant.
