Grafkelder Loisel; Groeve Loisel
The Grafkelder Loisel ("Loisel Tomb") or Groeve Loisel ("Loisel quarry") is a burial vault and marl quarry in the Dutch municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul in South Limburg. The underground quarry is located on the west side of Valkenburg on the Plenkertstraat in Plenkert on the northern edge of the Margraten Plateau in the transition to the Geuldal. At the site, the plateau plunges steeply for several meters.
About 50 meters to the southeast is the Alpha quarry, about 75 meters to the southeast are the Bergkelders Villa Alpha and to the west are the Plenkert quarry and the Groeve behind Villa Rozenheuvel. The former Reformed church stands in front of the crypt.
In the area of the Limburg marl quarries, this crypt and the Caestert crypt are the only places where people are buried in an underground marl quarry.
The quarry was used in the 19th and 20th centuries. The quarry was originally used as an ice and wine cellar for the Loisel family. Later the quarry was used as the burial vault of this family. Twelve people were buried there between 1822 and 1955.
In 1891, the land for the burial chapel was sold to have the Reformed Church built there.
The entrance to the quarry has two pilasters with a pediment and a decorative vase on top, all made of marl.
There is a grave wall in the quarry that is completely intact. In the left part of the quarry there is a five-meter wide pit that was previously used as an ice cellar.
The quarry has an area of 172 square meters and a corridor length of approximately 30 meters.
