Schinnen quarry
The Groeve Nagelbeek or the Groeve Schinnen is a sand quarry in Dutch South Limburg in the municipality of Beekdaelen. The quarry is located southwest of Nagelbeek and Schinnen, halfway between Spaubeek and Nuth, in the northeast of the Central Plateau.
The Groeve Spaubeek is located approximately 500 meters to the west. About 400 meters to the northwest is the Geological Monument Diependaal in the Diependaal slope forest, and 400 meters to the northeast is the Mariakapel van Nagelbeek.
The quarry was mined from the 1930s in five phases over the years. After the extraction in the first two phases was completed, these two phases were used as a rubbish dump from 1969 to 1992 (with only a top seal) and an installation was installed to collect landfill gas. Between 1987 and 2001, phase III was also used as a rubbish dump (with bottom and top sealing). Phase III has an installation for the collection of landfill gas and the bottom seal ensures leachate extraction.
In 2009, the excavation in phase IV was completed and almost done in phase V. No landfill will be constructed in these two phases.
The quarry is divided into two parts, with phases I, II and III being mined to the east of the Grubbenweg sunken road and phases IV and V to the west. Phase III looks like a grassy hill on which sheep graze.
Sands from the Heksenberg Member of the Breda Formation were extracted in the quarry. On top of these sands were Early Pleistocene deposits of the Westmaas from the Beegden Formation. The layers that are exposed in the quarry are:
- Loess from the Schimmert Member;
- Meuse gravel and sand from the St. Geertruid Member of the Beegden Formation;
- Sand from the Heksenberg Member from the Breda Formation.
