Inner Clyde Estuary refers to the upper estuarine section of the River Clyde in west-central Scotland, extending upstream from the Firth of Clyde into the Glasgow metropolitan area. Historically, the estuary has been heavily modified by dredging, land reclamation, and industrial development since the 18th and 19th centuries, and older geological and sedimentary records may refer to localities or river reaches that no longer exist in their original form.
Geologically, the Inner Clyde Estuary occupies a lowland basin developed on Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of the Midland Valley of Scotland. These include sandstones, mudstones, limestones, coal measures, and associated marine and deltaic deposits. The modern estuary is underlain and infilled by Quaternary sediments, including glacial tills, glaciofluvial sands and gravels, and younger estuarine and alluvial muds deposited during post-glacial sea-level rise.
The estuarine and near-estuarine sediments of the Inner Clyde are notable for recorded occurrences of glendonite, a calcite pseudomorph after ikaite. These occurrences are of geological interest as indicators of cold-temperature diagenetic conditions during sediment deposition or early burial, most likely associated with Late Pleistocene or early Holocene environments.
