A former underground asbestos mine located about 3½ miles just S of E of Bear Canyon Junction, about 14 miles NE of San Carlos. Located near the SE end of the Mescal Limestone outcrop that parallels the Natanes escarpment. Started 1927-1930 and closed 1949. Owned by Bear Canyon Asbestos Co.; Ted Heron of Globe.

One of the largest asbestos deposits in Arizona. Mineralization is a 30 to 50 foot thick limestone block or 'sliver,' over- and underlain by diabase sills. The main asbestos-serpentine zone is 16 feet above the lower diabase sill. This zone ranges from 10 to 20 inches thick and includes asbestos veins totaling 2 to 6 inches.

Workings include approximately 245 feet of tunnels from 4 openings, exploratory drifts and raises (1953) and stopes totaling 100,000 square feet in area. Production was some 1,200 tons of asbestos fiber (1927-1930); a few hundred tons of soft fiber (since 1949). Fifth largest producer of asbestos in Gila County area.
