Las minas del Centenillo que constan de mas de 40 trabajos mineros se encuentran dentro del Distrito minero de Linares-La Carolina y se hallan a unos 40 kilómetros al norte de Baños de la Encina. Se tiene constancia de su explotación en época romana.
En 1865 los empresarios ingleses Haselden y Rommer crean la “Sociedad Especial Minera Rio Grande” y comienzan la extracción de filones de galena argentífera, en 1886 la compañía se convierte en “Centenillo Silver Lead Mines Company Limited”, con posterioridad, en 1898 pasó a denominarse “New Centenillo Silver Lead Mines Company Limited”, todas con capital británico. Ya en 1921 pasa a denominarse “Minas del Centenillo S.A.” con capital español debido a la presión fiscal por parte del gobierno británico.
El poblado minero se organizó con patrón anglosajón y llegó a constar de viviendas para solteros, familias, capataces, técnicos y directivos, con todo tipo de servicios como hospital, farmacia, cuartel de la Guardia Civil, economato, iglesia católica y protestante, mercado, centralita telefónica, correos, casino, biblioteca, cine y pistas para tenis y futbol.
En 1953 la mayoría de las acciones pasan a mano de la “Sociedad Minero y Metalurgica de Peñarroya” y en 1964 llega su cierre definitivo. Se calcula que en los cien años de trabajos se llegó a extraer unas 800.000 Tm de plomo.
