A Cu-Pb-Ag-Co-Ni-U-V-Zn occurrence located in the NW¼NE¼NE¼ sec. 34 and center of the SE¼ sec. 28, T4N, R22W, IM, 10.7 km (6.6 miles) S of Mangum, in the former Tilley Township, on private land. Discovered in 1965 by the Lobaris Copper Company, Ardmore, Oklahoma (Bob Allen, John Hoard, and John Warren). Owned by J. N. Meadows. Operated by Lobaris Copper Company (built pilot mill in the NW¼NE¼NE¼ sec. 34, T4N, R22W, IM). MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated. The deposit covers about 15 square miles S of Mangum, in secs. 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11 & 12,T3N, R22W; and in secs. 10, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35, T4N, R22W, IM.

Mineralization is hosted in the Meadows Copper Shale bed of the Flowerpot Shale. The ore body is tabular, strikes N-S and dips W5-10 feet per mile at 0.46 meter thick, width of 4,827.9 meters and a length of 9,655.8 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included a Reducing Environment, Sabkha Process, With Organic Material (Spores). The Meadows copper shale is about 0.35 to 1.5 feet thick, about 30 to 35 feet below the Haystack gypsum, and about 6 feet below the Mardy Dolomite, or 0.5 to 1.5 feet below the Kiser Gypsum bed. The Meadows is a greenish-gray shale named after the principal land owner, Mr. J.N. Meadows. Mineralization in the Meadows bed extends about 6 miles north-south and as much as 3 miles E-W, and it probably underlies about 12 square miles (Johnson, 1976, p. 12). The values in the workings fields appear to be computed from the 6 and 3 mi values. These are not the dimensions of the workings (are there any workings?), but the dimensions of the deposit. Much of the deposit is malachite; however, where 10 feet or more of overburden occurs, the deposit is chalcocite. Local rocks include the Flowerpot Shale.

Regional geologic features include a gentle dip W about 5 to 10 feet per mile (1.6 km).

Workings include trenching and drilling is certain areas.

Analytical data results: 0.5-3.0% Cu (average 1.0%) from the Meadows copper shale; Pb at 20-90 parts per million (ppm); Ag at 24-45 ppm; Co at 15-40 ppm), Ni at 35-65 ppm; U at 70-100 ppm; V at 100-140 ppm; and Zn at 300-400 ppm.

Structure: Gentle Dip W. About 5-10 Ft/Mi

Tectonics: Interior Basin; Deltaic Red Bed Margin; Sabkha Environment

Commodity: Much of the deposit is malachite. Where 10 ft or more of overburden occurs, the meadows is chalcocite.

Deposit: The deposit occurs over 23 square miles or more, but only 12-15 square miles may be productive. Because of a large amount of oxidized ore, they sold their interests, and the area is inactive and unleased. Lockwood (1972; 1976) and Johnson (1976) give details. Hansen (1958) did the geology. Stroud and others (1970, p. 38) collected 11 samples (C-4 TO C-14) from meadows bed in SW-27, NW-10-4N-22W; AND NE-2, SE-5, NW-8, NW-12, 3N-22W, with analyses ranging from 0.02 TO 1.00% Cu. Discovery Year: EARLY 1965 the Mangum deposit is currently under development: it averages about 14 inches (36 cm) thick and about 1 percent copper (Johnson, 1976, p. 3). The Mangum deposit is a copper shale nearly identical to that at Creta, but it generally is more oxidized and occurs in a slightly higher bed of the Flowerpot shale. Test pits have been dug and preliminary concentration tests made on the ore, and a mill is being built on the properties. (Johnson, 1976, p. 4).

Development: Much of the ore is oxidized (malachite) and they sold their interests.

Geology: Meadows copper shale (after j.n. Meadows, principal land owner) is about 0.5-1.5 ft thick, about 30-35 ft below the haystack gypsum, or 6 ft below the marty dolomite. Hansen (1958) did the geology.; hr.age.mv: guadalupian
