A Zr occurrence/mine located in the SW¼NE¼ of sec. 21, T3N, R15W, about 6 miles NNW of Indiahoma, on federal wilderness land (Charons Garden Wilderness area). Smith, et al (1997) reported other mines 600 feet SSW and 0.25 to 0.5 miles north. Most - if not all - of the small mines, including the Crystal King Mine, were vertical shafts which were filled in by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Collecting is not allowed on the Refuge. Zircon crystals were mined (in the 1950s-1960s) from the Hale Spring Pegmatite in Cambrian age Quanah Granite.

Deposit: Another mine was located 600 ft ss W and about 150 ft higher. Anderson (1941, p. 39) said that the strike of the pegmatite varied from due n. To n30oe. Al-shaieb et al. (1980, deposit 22) said that the strike was n47ow. Perhaps these were different pegmatites. Merritt, ham, and anderson (1941), attached to burk (1936), said that another mine was reported 0.25 to 0.5 mi farther north.
Development: Sterrett (1908, p. 792-793) mentioned the discovery. Youngman (1931, p. 17) mentioned prospecting by hackney and sons. Burk (1936, sheet 847) mentions mine being worked in 1905, to 35 ft, and again in 1934.
Geology: While zircons were formed in hydrothermal veins, some copper was also incorporated in the zircons in concentrations much higher than in the granite. Later weathering of the zircons could have released some copper ions to the hennessey sea. M camb. The age given by larsen et al. (1953, p. 1121-1122) was 575-790 m.y., with average 635 m.y. Tilton et al. (1957) had 480-650 m.y.
