Deposit: The montmorillonite occurs in an alluvium-covered area, exposed by several excavations in the center of the area. A thick clay-water slurry oozes to the surface at one place. One drill hole was in alluvium for 7 ft, in place greenish gray bentonitic mud and shale from 17.5 to 43 ft, in pale gray bentonitic mud and shale from 43 to 50.5 ft and in sandstone and argillaceous sandstone in the other intervals down to 84 ft. Tests performed by the USBM on 2 samples from the clay intervals. Both had a yield of 49 barrels showing that a viscosity of 15 centipoises was achieved with an 11 % clay mixture. Flat-lying bentonite is present in pit and nearby areas in an otherwise alluvium-covered area. On the east side of the pit, a peculiar ridge of tuff about 15 ft high and 50 ft wide separates the pit from the stripped area to the east. This bedrock material is pale red with patches and streaks of devitrified glass without clay. Thickness of the clay in the pit is uncertain but drill-hole data suggest it is about 40 ft with some poorer clay interlayers. A line of springs is present along the south end of the pit and stripped areas. Deposit type: Low-sulfide Au-quartz vein

Development: Three diamond drill holes were drilled to depths of 84, 55, and 33 ft in 1963. In 1965, a small mill was constructed un winnemucca to process clay from this property. The mill was idle in 1968 and very little material was mined. It was listed As an active mine employing 2 persons from 1980-1983, owned by k.w. Synder, p.o. Box 1007, winnemucca. In 1984, ownership had passed to nevada cube, inc., who employed 4 people at the mill in sec. 28.
