Alteration: Oxidation
Deposit: Area of active salt production occupied about 2 square miles. Playa occupies an area of about 16 sq miles. Veins in purallel dikes
Development: Several salt-bearing springs were discovered in march, 1870 along the east edge of eagle marsh, within several miles of the central pacific railroad. Leete soon organized the eagle salt works and salt was produced there from 1871 to 1913. It had the largest total production in nevada and was the principal supplier of salt to the comstock mills and later to dairy and domestic users. When the railroad was relocated some miles to the east in 1903, leete organized the eagle saltworks railroad co., and built a 14.5-mile standard gauge railroad along the old bed from fernley to the salt works. In 1871, an effort was made to obtain borate at the north end of the marsh.
Geology: Series of parallel, N 30-40 E dikes sheared w/green stained feldspar veining, some CuOx staining dikes 1-2 ft thick up to 30 ft thick. Mainly qtz and feldspar with some chlorite. Salt springs water was collected in evaporation vats and halite was precipitated and scraped up. One acre of vats produced 10 tons salt per day from june to october.
