Lignite opencast mine located about 9 km NE of Zeitz and 3 km W of Pegau. Approximately 75% of the exposed area is situated on the municipal territories of Hohenmölsen, Elsteraue and Zeitz, Burgenlandkreis, Saxony-Anhalt, and 25 % on the municipal territory of Elstertrebnitz, Landkreis Leipzig, Saxony. Exploration began in 1941 near the village of Profen (Elsteraue), with actual coal production starting 3 years later. Since 1994 the mine is operated by the company MIBRAG (Mitteldeutsche Braunkohlengesellschaft mbH).
