with US Highway 183 1987-88 construction
Highway construction site active for about six months, 1987-88.

According to Hal Prior, who collected there with due caution, the site was dangerous due to high vertical walls, soft rock, and unstable ground due to blasting. Despite the hazards it became a popular collecting site for inexperienced individuals and families supplying calcite crystals to a local metaphysical shop. One such collector (who had been warned of the hazards days before) was seriously injured in a rockfall in 1988, resulting in a highly publicized rescue operation. As a result the site was permanently closed to collecting and placed under guard until further construction work completely buried the exposure. (Hal Prior, p.c., 3/2022)

Hal observed that the abundant strontianite at the locality appears to have formed at the expense of the large celestine crystals, many of which were at least partially corroded and/or encrusted with strontianite.
