The Nervia Valley has as its dominant lithology the Ventimiglia Flysch (dated Upper Bartonian – Lower Priabonian), turbidite deposits, represented by banks of coarse graded sandstones and fine sandstones in banks and strata with silty-arenaceous and silty-clayey intercalations; marly-clayey facies are sometimes more dominant.
Sandstones can be easily distinguished as they are the thickest and most prominent layers compared to the softer marly-clay layers. The sandstones have a color ranging from yellowish to brownish and are attributable to facies B and C of the Bouma sequence. Sandstones are usually well cracked due to tectonics and variations in the volume of sedimentary material, it is in these fissures that skeletal quartz sometimes crystallize, immersed in a secondary clay that fills the fissure. The fissures can be centimeter or decimetric in size both in width and height, they always develop perpendicular to the arenaceous layers, sometimes the walls of the fissure are copiously covered with calcite crystals while other times they are covered only by a few small quartz crystals.
The most significant cracks are hard to find both because of their random distribution and because of the conformation of the territory itself; for example agricultural crops, private land, and vegetation are an obstacle. The quartz crystals of Nervia Valley have typical reddish clay inclusions (which differentiate them from those of the locality of Porretta Terme), sometimes they can be darker due to bituminous inclusions (friendly reminder that it’s not smoky quartz), and they can also have liquid and gaseous inclusions! The size of the quartz varies from millimeter to decimeter size (a real regional record!)
