From 1820 the lignite mines “Friederike”, “Marie” and “Ludwig” were located in Hamersleben. Since then, the place has been characterized by lignite mining. The open-cast mine of the “Gewerkschaft Vereinigte Friederike” was closed in 1924. The lake “Herzspiel” north-east of Hamersleben emerged from the collapsed shafts of the former “Gewerkschaft Vereinigte Friederike” mine.
