A former gold mine.
This mine was active from around 1906 to 1909. It was developed by W.C. Hill. A large ore body was stoped from the No 1. level to the surface to feed a 20 head mill erected at the site. Hans Irvine looked at purchasing the mine but baulked at the ₤20,000 asking price, stating not enough development had been done lower down officially, and believing the mine had been salted unofficially.
Hill attained ₤100,000 worth of gold from the mine, and was making ₤500 profit per month, despite employing 30 men. This was a small fortune in early 20th Century figures. The slimes remained amounting to ₤10,000 profit for anyone willing to cyanide them.
This was the same Hill, who in 1908 appears at the Gwalia arbitration court crying poor that mine owners including himself could not possibly afford a pay increase for miners. Several other mines were worked by him in the district around this time.
Hill in 1908 purchased a large pastoral property in the area, and several adverts appeared in the local newspaper:
Notice: I hereby give notice that I have bought all cattle branded C O B running in the Mt Margaret District and warn the public generally against dealing or interfering with them in any way. W.C. Hill Murrin Nov 15th 1907.
The site of this old mine is about 1 kilometre south of the Minara homestead, and a little south-west of the old Nangaroo mine marked with a small open pit and rusting metal vats. Hill's Proprietary contains a tailings sand pile, and several nearby shafts. Many shafts are scattered in this area for about two kilometres in a south, east and north-east direction from the mine.
