The quote below is from the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Geologic Resources Inventory Report, courtesy of the National Park service.

“Located in semi-arid eastern Oregon, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument includes more than 5,700 ha (14,000 ac) in three widely separated administrative units: the Sheep Rock, Painted Hills, and Clarno units (fig. 1). Established in 1974, the monument preserves outstanding Cenozoic fossil localities and strata that contain a great variety of fossils from hundreds of species. The fossils and strata document an incredible global climate change and subsequent evolution of habitats from about 51 million to 7 million years ago, from the Eocene to the Late Miocene epochs.”

This location is the Clarno Unit. The Clarno Formation, 5,900 ft. thick, is composed of a heterogeneous sequence of volcanic rocks and sedimentary rock layers. Abundant fossils are found in the Clarno Nut Beds and the Hancock Mammal Quarry.
