Once active (small) manganese mine, later incorporated into West Rand Consolidated mines, now inactive.
The Orient manganese mine is situated on the farm Steenkoppie 101, about 12 miles west of Krugersdorp, the main deposit being located in a brecciated fault zone in the upper part of the Dolomite Series of the Transvaal System. The ore body appears to be roughly tabular in shape, strikes in an east-west direction and dips at about 40 degrees to the north; the thickness varies considerably and decreases from about 80 feet in the western portion to less than 8 feet in the eastern area. The foot-wall formations consist of brecciated ferruginous shale, chert and secondary quartz; the hanging wall is less brecciated and consists largely of chert bands and shaly formations. Contacts at the foot-wall and the hanging wall are indefinite and pockets of high-grade manganese ore are often found several feet above or below the ore body proper (Ortlepp, 1964).
