Polanka nad Odrou is a former municipality, cadastral area and since November 24, 1990, also a city district in the southwest of Ostrava. Polanka has an area of 17.3 km² and almost five thousand permanently registered citizens, which, unlike in greater Ostrava, is constantly increasing. The river Odra flows through the perimeter, according to which part of the name was derived. The district also includes the Polanská niva national nature reserve, part of which is also included in the Poodří protected landscape area. Originally, the territory of Polanka nad Odrou was divided into two cadastral areas: Horní Polanka (northern part) and Dolní Polanka (southern part), which were divided at the upper end near Klimkovice by the Polančice stream and at the lower end of the main road, today named 1. května street.
