Prehistoric flint mining complex in use since ca. 3000 B.C.; hundreds of interconnected shafts are scattered in an area of about 25 hectares; flint and calcite are also found on small dumps in the forest.
Beuker (1990):
"[...] Because the layers of good-quality flint are situated fairly deep here, 6- to 16-metre-deep shafts were excavated, with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 metres. Once the desired depth was reached, tunnels were excavated in several directions. Using a shafted flint hoe or an antler pick, the chalk containing the flint nodules was removed. At crucial points, support pillars were left standing (to prevent collapse). Even escape tunnels were excavated between the warrens. [...] Mining lasted for a few centuries and must have been done by specialists. Products from these mines have been found spread across a wide area. The flint is of good quality and often light to dark grey in colour."
