Maumee Stone Co. Quarry


An active quarry for building stone in the Lockport Dolomite and Greenfield Dolomite. The quarry is located in section 7.

This quarry was dug in 1962 in response to the rising costs and soft stone encountered at the “Old” Wood County Stone and Construction Co. Quarry (http://www.mindat.org/loc-55044.html), located on the corner of Ohio Highway 25 and Powell Road. The “new” quarry would later become part of Maumee Stone Co.’s umbrella, then Stoneco (Rice, 1999).

The Stoneco Portage Quarry is well known for producing excellent specimens of celestine crystals. Specimens that have a documented date post-1962 and labeled from Portage, Ohio are from this locality. Specimens with a documented date pre-1962, come from the Wood County Stone and Construction Co. Quarry.

In 2003, Stoneco was acquired by Oldcastle Materials Inc., and Stoneco's Ohio quarries became part of the Shelly Company. Ernest Carlson (2015) lists this locality as the Shelly Materials Inc., Portage Quarry (formerly Stoneco and Maumee Stone Co.).
