At certain levels of the Maderuelo Formation (Vallesian age, Middle Miocene), carbonate levels appear that have undergone diagenetic silicification and have become white opal, sometimes pseudomorphic of gypsum crystals. The formation covers a wide area and both nodules and massive levels of opal can be found, sometimes with high lateral continuity, in the terms of Alconada de Maderuelo and Campo de San Pedro, as well as in neighboring areas. The series is well visible and accessible on the slope next to the left bank of Arroyo de Cañamares. Opal is CT type and has an intense apple-green fluorescence when excited with UV light, both short and long wave, although there are authors who describe it as yellowish.
These easily accessible outcrops have a great historical interest since it was the main area of extraction of opals for the construction and maintenance of the threshing boards of large areas of Castilla by the stonemasons of Cantalejo (Segovia) for centuries, as well as possible sources for archaeological sites.
En ciertos niveles de la Formación Maderuelo (edad Vallesiense, Mioceno Medio) aparecen niveles carbonatados que han sufrido una silicificación diagenética y se han transformado en ópalo de color blanco, en ocasiones pseudomórfico de cristales de yeso. La formación abarca una amplia zona y pueden encontrarse tanto nódulos como niveles masivos de ópalo, a veces con alta continuidad lateral, en los términos de Alconada de Maderuelo y Campo de San Pedro, así como en zonas limítrofes. La serie es bien visible y accesible en la ladera junto a la orilla izquierda del Arroyo de Cañamares. El ópalo es de tipo CT y posee una intensa fluorescencia en tono verde manzana cuando es excitado con luz UV, tanto ante la onda corta como la larga, aunque hay autores que la describen de color amarillento.
Estos afloramientos de fácil acceso tienen un gran interés histórico ya que fue la principal zona de extracción de ópalos para la construcción y el mantenimiento de los trillos de amplias zonas de Castilla por parte de los canteros de Cantalejo (Segovia) durante siglos, así como posibles fuentes para los yacimientos arqueológicos.
