A Mn-W occurrence/group of claims located in the N½NW¼ sec. 10, T18S, R3W, SBM, 1.2 km (0.7 mile) S of Redhouse Mountain (coordinates of record), on the S slope of Redhouse Mountain (about 10 road miles NE of Hatch and about 37 miles N34W of Las Cruces), on Bureau of Land Management administered land. Owned by J. Velarde, F. C. Lopez, A. Loran and B. E. Luchini, New Mexico (1949). Owned by H. F. Carmichael and Associates, Garfield, New Mexico (1950- ). Operated by H.F. Carmichael (1955- ). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. Accurate location is for the prospect in section 10, as shown on the Upham Topographic quadrangle. Called the Sheriff Mine in 1917 & called the Blackie group in the 1950's.
Mineralization is hosted in the Montoya Group dolomite. The ore body is irregular in form, strikes N and dips vertical at a thickness of 2.44 meters, width of 6.1 meters and a length of 24.38 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included fault-fracture structural control. Local rocks include (Phanerozoic/Cenozoic/Tertiary) Lower and Middle Santa Fe Group.
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall depth of 6.1 meters and an overall length of 45.72 meters. Workings reported in 1961 consisted of 4 shallow inclined adits and an open cut. (the topo map reflects 2 groups of 3 prospect pit symbols labeled "prospects" at this point).
Farnham (1961) reported about 200 tons of Mn ore, ranging from 20 to 40% Mn, was produced from 1917 to 1955.
New Mexico Fluorspar Corporation: Last Chance, Mescalero, Bonanza, Esperanza, La Pala Azul and 2 de Abril claims in Woolfer Canyon.
These were supposedly overstaked in the 1928 as the Valverde group.
Deposit: Workings reported in 1961 consisted of four shallow inclined adits and an opencut. Discovery year: during world war I
