A former small surface and underground Au-Ag-Pb-Cu mine located in North-central sec. 23, T.15S., R.2E. (protracted), 6 miles south of Covered Wells and 3½ miles SW of the Quijotoa Trading Post. Produced 1917 and 1931. Owned/operated at times, or in part, by Stephanus Mines; Stephens-Harford Mines, Inc.; Larrymade Mines Co.; Knight; and, Hedrick.
Mineralization is a shear zone with spotty free gold and silver chlorides with minor oxidized base metal sulfides in quartz, gouge, calcite and iron and manganese oxides in lenticular lenses along a shear zone in altered Laramide quartz diorite intrusive that strikes NW and dips 65ºNE. The ore zone is 9.14 meters long and 1.22 meters wide. The vein filling consists chiefly of banded, coarse, dense, grayish-white quartz, commonly accompanied by dark-red gouge. This quartz forms lenticular masses, from 10 to 30 feet long by 1 to 4 feet wide, which fray out abruptly into stringers. It is accompanied by calcite, iron oxides, and some manganese dioxide. The ore consists mainly of dense, gray, brecciated quartz cemented in part with hematite and calcite. The gold occurs chiefly in this cementing material and is in places associated with manganese dioxide. The principal streak of relatively high-grade ore was from 6 inches (15 cm) to 2 feet (0.6 meter) wide. The quartz diorite wall rock has been somewhat altered to calcite and sericite.
Workings include a 300 foot (91.44 meter) deep inclined shaft, a few hundred feet of drifts & several shallow openings aggregating 152.4 meters in length. Worked intermittently since the 1880's and mainly in 1931-1935, producing some 600 tons of ore averaging aboput 0.5 oz. /T each of Au & Ag, and minor Pb & Cu. Ore also assayed at 1.39 oz. Au & 1.11 oz. Ag/T (1931 shipments).
