A quarry in Tertiary sandstones with baryte layers. Baryte typically forms rosette-like aggregates, known as Rockenberg roses ('Rockenberger Röschen').
Analyses by Hofmann have shown the the roses contain more quartz (sand)~ 50 % than baryte ~ 42 %.
The "quarry" is an abandoned sand pit to the north of the former “Marienschloß” monastery.
