Gold ore was discovered in 1859 by John Gregory and extracted from the Bates Vein, which is part of the Gregory Lode. The mine closed in 1936, at which time the shaft was approximately 800 feet deep. Attempts to re-open the mine occurred in 1987 by Central City Consolidated Mining Company and again in the mid-2000s when Wits Basin Precious Minerals, Inc. acquired the property. As of 2020, GS Mining Company, LLC was extracting gold from the property.
