A former Cu-F-Au-Ag occurrence/mine located in sec. 3, T15S, R4W, NMM, (7.5 miles due S of Truth or Consequences; on the E flank of the Caballos Mountains and S of Palomas Gap), on private (patented) land within a Bureau of Land Management administered area. Discovered before 1880. The property consists of 5 patented claims covering 103.3 acres. Owned by Vernon Blye (1966- ). Operated by Seymour S. Thurmond Jr. (1947- ). Operated during the period 1909 to 1947. Owned by Vernon Blye, Mountainair (1963). MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.
Mineralization is hosted in Late Cambrian quartzite in the rock units of Bliss Sandstone and El Paso Limestone. The ore body is pinch-and-swell in form, strikes E-W and dips 80N at a thickness of 0.91 meter and a length of 9.14 meter. Controls for ore emplacement included a fault zone provided the path and fissures host for the mineralized solutions. Fissure veins are associated with an E-W-trending fault zone. Near the entrance to the mine the veins are in Precambrian granite. Most of the ore is found in Bliss Sandstone E of the mine entrance. Near the end of the main adit the veins pass into El Paso Limestone and consist of small stringers of fluorite and calcite. The fault becomes less distinct in the limestone. Harley (1934) , believed the mineral source to be a deep-seated intrusive of Tertiary age exposed on the E side of the Caballos Mountains, just E of the Marion Mine. Local rocks include plutonic rocks, middle Proterozoic.
Local geologic structures include many small E-W-trending faults cut across N-S-trending Caballos Mountains.
Workings include surface and underground openings with a length 304.8 meters and an overall depth of 36.58 meters. The mine was reported to consist of an 800 foot adit with a winze 120 feet deep, and drifted for short distances at 100 foot and 120 foot levels. Surface workings amount to a few shallow pits, open cuts and shafts.
Production was estimated at $100,000 (period values) of ore, mainly Cu, but some Ag and a trace of Au.
Analytical data results: Ore was reported to assay 3% to 11% Cu. Material on the dump was reported to average 1.4% Cu. Samples assayed for fluorite averaged 56% CaF2 and 31% SiO2. Assays reported by G.T. Harley, 1934 and F.E. Williams (1966).
