Other/historical names associated with this locality:
De Dijcker zandgroeve
A sand quarry started in the 1960s and abandoned since the late 90s.
The quarry, which exploited the old Zenne valley alluvial sediments, produced sand and gravel.
The Zenne river, which eroded the Brabant massif, deposited the sediments along a wide and long track.
Rocks and minerals from that Brabant massif were rarely found in the quarry.
It is also very well known for enormous quantities of fossil bones of mammoths, rhinoceros and deer.
Under the old river bed, a Bartonian layer was found with shark teeth, but this layer was not exploited.
It was hit more by luck than for production.
A small but very interesting museum about this locality is situated in the center of Zemst near the library behind the church.
Open by appointment only.
