Valentin-Cocq, zinc plant VM.
The exploitation of the Valentin Cocq site began in 1846 with the construction of a zinc smelter by the company "Houillère et Fonderie Valentin-Cocq".
In 1853, Vieille Montagne took over the site. For almost 125 years, this factory concentrated exclusively on the production of zinc from ores and coal, first extracted locally and then from external deposits. Production was by means of reduction furnaces fired by coal from the local coal mine, the Charbonnage Valentin-Cocq, created in 1928 by a merger of the Bure Valentin and the Bure Cocq-Bouxhette. This coal mine was sold to the Charbonnages réunis de la concorde in 1889.
By 1912, the Valentin-Cocq Vieille Montagne zinc plant was one of the largest zinc production units in the world, with an annual capacity of 42,000 tonnes.
The former smelter was shut down for good in 1982.
