Blue Slate Mine


A small former surface and underground Cu-Au-Ag-Fe mine located in the NW¼ sec. 7, T7N, R17W (Bouse 15 minute topo map), about ½ mile East of the Dutchman Mine, about 6 miles NW of Bouse, in the northern portion of the Plomosa Mountains, on BLM-administered land. Owned at times, or in part, by Bouse & McMahon (discoverers); Rogers & Lee; McDonald; Protection Gold & Copper Co. (1929); and the Great Western Gold & Copper Mining Co. (1934). Reopened 1918 and ultimately closed 1929.

Mineralization is spotty copper, as carbonates and silicate, enriched by secondary enrichment, with coarse-grained, vuggy quartz, limonite, and hematite, and crushed rock, in a strong, approximate 2 foot wide, fissure vein that occurs in a fault zone that strikes about N.20ºW. and dips steeply NE-ward and cuts metamorphosed Mesozoic sandy shale cut by diorite porphyry dikes. Gangue is coarse-grained, vuggy, grayish-white quartz with more or less limonite and hematite. The vein walls show much hematite and some copper stain.

Workings are 2 relatively shallow shafts at 60 feet and 150 feet (45.72 meters) deep, with very little drifting; Most of the ore mined was from surface cuts on the vein. This mine was worked intermittently, from about the early 1900's through 1932. It produced some 130 tons of ore averaging about 3% Cu, 1 oz. Au/T, and traces of silver.
