Empire Mine
Little is known of the mining company that mined at this locality. What is known is that this mine produces some of the most colorful datolite on the Keweenaw Peninsula, including reds, oranges, and transluscent. One word of caution; DO NOT drive through the open gate on the main highway!!! It can be locked behind you with no other way to get out. It is best to park at the roadside park across the highway and walk the two or so miles to the minesite. With a little patience, it can be well worth the walk!!
