Brentwood and neighbouring Hornchurch were situated at the southernmost extremities of the Ice Age glacier. Associated with this location is an abundance of chert, patches of alluvial sand and the rarer to find Bagshot sand. Thorndon Country Park also has a small stream cutaway exposing London Clay formation.
