The Nebraska Mining Company was organized in 1853 and began exploration along a line of ancient pits in the hillside. Miners began driving two adits in 1854 and recovered 33 tons of copper in the process. In 1855, another 35 tons of copper was removed, in addition to much silver. By 1856, miners had begun sinking three shafts on the property, all the while recovering mass and barrel copper. An 1859 company report stated that, because of the great mining depression that had hit in 1858, the company scaled back operations to stay open. During this time, the company also leased the mine to tributors. In 1863, the company reorganized and merged with the nearby Caledonia Mine, forming the New Caledonia Mining Company. During its time, the Nebraska produced approximately 128 tons of refined copper.

The Nebraska and Caledonia are connected underground through the lower adit levels. Today the mine is owned by Evergreen Explorations. Copper and silver can be found near the entrance, but the real prize here are the ancient "hammerstones" used by the prehistoric Native Americans to extract copper.
