A granite quarry was started in the vicinity of Taft and Swain Streets by the firm of Clark & Aronson around 1886. An ox path was used to transport granite to the nearby Boston & Maine RR line for shipment.
At the Wilmington town meeting of March 4, 1889, the company requested permission to look into building a horse-drawn railroad spur to replace the ox path.
By June of 1889, the quarry was listed for sale.
Cut granite had been hauled to a field beside the B&M railroad, near what was later to become the Diamond Crystal Salt Co. The stone remained there for about half a century. One piece was used to make the World War I monument at the end of Glen Road.
